Managing a varied array of products and services can be a daunting task for any company and ours is not an exception. As most of you know, DotNetMushroom is the website and web application development division of the Holistic IT Group. However, our core strength in the Maltese market lies in the provision of IT related courses which we provide through our sister company Holistic Courses. Hence the reason why our websites developed for Maltese companies still carry the “Developed by Holistic” wording despite the fact that they link to DotNetMushroom website.
In these coming months we will be primarily focusing on the identification of our core expertise and making them more accessible to our stakeholders, be they clients, potential clients or followers. Read More

On Development
One of the classical developer cartoons that I saw showed a man, the client, requesting to a builder to build a house. The client is then depicted with a thought (the usual ‘cloud’) dreaming of a palace. The builder is also depicted with a thought, but that of a normal house.
In our world this happens a lot. While analysis of any requirements is essential, it is also important to educate customers on the importance of analysis. It has happened more than once that a customer explains the requirements; we write it in an analysis document which the customer does not read! A house with bad foundations is subject to collapse, and changing on wrong requirements is not always the best solution, sometimes a redesign is the best solution for a solid application. This, though, increases the cost of change requirements!
Tools like DotNetMushroom RAD are designed to help us in quickly develop solutions, but nothing can replace good analysis.
Deliver Solutions
The motto for DotNetMushroom is ‘Less coffee, more beer’, and I am not going to talk and explain all the discussion we had internally to decide it! What I wanted to discuss is the motto for Holistic, our mother company, which is ‘we do not sell products, we provide solutions’.
The importance of this slogan is that each developer is instigated to think about the solution in itself. A customer often requests a system which is identical to a paper based solution that is currently being used, or a site which is similar to the site of a competitor. The mentality behind providing a ‘solution’ is that you, as a developer, as a designer, or as an analyst go further to the requirements of the user and provide a holistic system which helps the customer provide more than it is required.
If you are an end-customer, and reading this you will appreciate the advantage that you will get from a developer who does not only do what you need but proposes alternate solutions to enhance your requirements and in the end getting a better result. Often customers will see this as a way for a developer to charge more: it is not always the case. Buying an off-the-shelf product may be cheap and quick, but getting a customized solution gives you the flexibility required to gain competitive advantage, enhances your image across the web and in the end gives you a better Return On Investment.
DotNetMushroom develops sites using DNM RAD with solutions in mind: solutions which need to cater for the requirements of end-customers and developers. You, as a developer, can also use DNM RAD to quickly help the customer understand the solution you are proposing and also to get better understanding of the requirements.
